In New York city walking the street
Ran out of had nothing to eat
I at the Plaza, that fancy hotel
Where you can in if you're well to do well...
The first of July and a hundred and
I stopped at the front revolving door
I stepped in the door and around for a ride
myself to the cool air inside
Then I found myself in a chandeliered
Where people were and I hid in the gloom
My hunger hurt 'til I thought I would break
When a waiter brought out a big cake

Oh strawberry cake
Oh that strawberry
Out in California them berries grown
And into city them berries were flown
For making that strawberry

I thought of Oxnard, just north of LA
Where I picked strawberries for a day
Hard work with no future for the was done
And I eastward a-travelin' by thumb
And nobody me here in this town
I like a stray dog they all kick around
Them reminded me of my bad breaks
I'm and I want that strawberry cake

I deserve strawberry cake
Deserve that strawberry
I ran and I grabbed it out the side door
Into Central Park the bushes I tore
Holdin' my strawberry

I look behind me and what do I see
The and headwaiter and the matre d
I had a helpin' of cake as I ran
I gobble them as fast as I can
closin' the gap as I slowed down to eat
But the brought a new surge of power to my feet
I hid in the bush the lead I did take
And I quietly finished my cake

I ate all that strawberry
fine fancy strawberry cake
Someone at the plaza is without
But for the first time in now my belly don't hurt
I'm of strawberry cake
