A poor orphan girl Maria
Was walking to one day
She stopped for to rest by the
Where a bird with a broken lay

A few moments till she saw it
For feathers were covered with sand
But soon clean and it
Was in the warmth of Maria's small hand

She gave her last peso
On a cage made of rushes and
She fed it loose from the market
And watched it grow with time

Now the Christmas Eve service was
And the shone with tinsel and light
And all of the town folks presents
To lay by the manger night

There were and incense
And in packages fit for a king
But for one bird in a small cage
Maria had to bring

She waited till just before
So no one see her go in
And crying she knelt by the
For her was unworthy of Him

Then the Lord to her through the darkness
"Maria, brings you to me
If the bird in the cage is your
the door and let me see"

she trembled, she did as He ask her
And out of the cage the flew
Soaring up the rafters
On a wing had healed good as new

Just then the midnight rang out
And the little bird started to
A song that no words could
Whose beauty was fit for a

Now Maria felt blessed just to
To that cascade of notes and long
As her offering was to Heaven
By the very nightingale's song
