Tom Joad got out of the old McAlester
he got his parole.
After four long years on a man charge,
Tom Joad a-walkin' down the road, poor boy,
Tom Joad a-walkin' down the road.

Tom Joad, he met a truck man;
he caught him a ride.
He said, "I just got loose from Pen
On a called homicide,
A charge homicide."

That truck rolled away in a cloud of
Tommy turned his toward home.
He met Casey, and they had a little drink,
But they found his family they was gone,
He found his family they was gone.

He found his mother's old shoe,
Found his hat.
And he found little and Muley said,
"They've tractored out by the cats,
They've been out by the cats."

Tom Joad walked down to the farm,
his family.
They took Preacher and loaded in a car,
And his said, "We've got to get away."
His said, "We've got to get away."

Now, the twelve of the Joads a mighty heavy load;
But Grandpa did cry.
He up a handful of land in his hand,
Said: "I'm stayin' with the farm I die.
Yes, I'm stayin' with the farm I die."

They fed him short ribs and coffee and soothing
And Joad did die.
They buried Grandpa Joad by the of the road,
on the California side,
They buried on the California side.

They stood on a mountain and they to the west,
And it looked like the land.
That bright green valley a river running through,
There was work for every single hand, thought,
There was for every single hand.

The Joads rolled to the jungle camp,
they cooked a stew.
And the hungry kids of the jungle camp
"We'd like to have some, too."
Said: "We'd like to some, too."

Now a deputy sheriff fired at a man,
a woman in the back.
Before he take his aim again,
Casey dropped him in his track, poor boy,
Preacher dropped him in his track.

handcuffed Casey and they took him in jail;
And he got away.
And he met Tom on the old river bridge,
And these few words he did say, boy,
few words he did say.

"I preached for the Lord a long time,
Preached the rich and the poor.
Us folkses, all get together,
'Cause we got a chance anymore.
We got a chance anymore."

Now, the come, and Tom and Casey run
To the where the water run down.
But the thugs hit Casey with a club,
They laid Preacher on the ground, poor Casey,
They laid Casey on the ground.

Tom Joad, he grabbed that club,
Hit him the head.
Tom Joad took in the dark rainy night,
And a deputy and a preacher dead, two men,
A deputy and a lying dead.

Tom run where his mother was asleep;
He her up out of bed.
An' he goodbye to the mother that he loved,
Said what Casey said, Tom Joad,
He said Preacher Casey said.

"Ever'body might be one big soul,
Well it looks that to me.
that you look, in the day or night,
That's I'm a-gonna be, Ma,
That's where I'm be.

little children are hungry and cry,
Wherever people free.
Wherever men are for their rights,
That's I'm a-gonna be, Ma.
That's I'm a-gonna be."
